Look constellation Pegasus in skywatching in December 2022

What's Going special on in December? Your evening planet's highlights include the constellation Pegasus and Mars's disappearance, in skywatching in December 2022.

On December 7, there will be one of those wonderful moments when the sky will change dramatically right before your eyes.

On December evenings, the constellation Pegasus can be seen if you look high in the southwest sky.  Pegasus is a constellation named for one of the more fantastical creatures of ancient mythology.

That's Pegasus, the Horse with Wings.

Pegasus, a winged horse from Greek mythology, inspired the name of the constellation.  It was first listed in the 2nd century by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy.

According to Greek myth, Pegasus rode into adventures with the hero Belaraphon and later carried the thunderbolts of Zeus himself, earning him a place among the stars as a reward.

Pegasus is the 7th largest constellation in the sky.  There are 88 constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union in contemporary astrology.

The most prominent feature of the Pegasus constellation is its asterism or pattern of stars called the Great Square, and the key to finding it in the sky.

These four stars of Great Square, which are about equal in brightness,  form the central part of the winged horse's body.

How to see Pegasus

Arrow

Pegasus is easily seen this December because of the brilliant Jupiter.

The Great Square begins around 15 degrees to the north of the giant planet 'Jupiter', which can be seen facing southward about halfway up the sky.

Pegasus is an excellent starting point for navigating to other features in the night sky, so Pegasus is a useful and helpful constellation for stargazers.

Including the tangled galaxies of Stephan's Quintet and the globular cluster M15, the Pegasus constellation itself contains a number of brilliant deep-sky objects.

Along with the constellations Andromeda, Auriga, Cassiopeia, Cepheus, Cetus, Lacerta, Perseus, and Triangulum, Pegasus belongs to the Perseus family.
