Significant features / Nature / Characteristics of Operation Research:

Some significant features or natures or characteristics of Operation Research (OR)┬аare given below:

  • Decision Making:

A major premise of OR is that decision-making, irrespective of the situation involved, can be considered as a general systematic process. OR improves the quality of decisions.

  • Scientific Approach:

OR applies scientific methods for the purpose of analysing and solution of complex problems. It is a formalized process of reasoning. In this approach, there is no place for guesswork and the personal bias of the decision-maker.

  • Objective-oriented Approach:

OR attempts to locate the best or optimal solution to the problem under consideration. OR tries to find the best (optimum) decisions relative to the largest possible portion of the total organization.

  • Inter-disciplinary Team Approach:

OR is inter-disciplinary in nature and requires a team approach to a solution to the problem. Managerial problems have economic, physical, biological and engineering aspects. This requires a blend of people with expertise in the areas of mathematics, statistics, engineering, economics, management, computer science and so on.

  • Imperfectness of solutions:

By OR techniques, we cannot obtain perfect answers to our problems but, only the quality of the solution is improved from worse to bad answers.

  • Use of Digital Computer:

The models of OR need a lot of computation and therefore, the use of computers becomes necessary. With the use of computers, it is possible to handle complex problems requiring a large number of calculations.

  • Quantitative solution:

By providing a quantitative basis for decision-making, operation research supports management. The goal of operation research is to provide a systematic and scientific rational approach to quantitative solutions to various managerial problems.

  • Human judgment:

Human factors, which play an important role in determining quantitative solutions, are sometimes overlooked in problems. As a result, a study of operation research would be incomplete without a study of human factors.

  • Optimize the total output (Optimizing Nature):

OR tries to optimize the total output by maximizing the profit and minimizing the cost.

  • Continuing Process:

Operation research continues with the arrival of new problems, the finding and implementation of their solutions, and the interpretation of the outcomes of such implementation. In today’s dynamic environment, problems continue to emerge. As a result, OR becomes a continuous process.
