Guava Health Benefits

Guava is a popular and cheap fruit of winter. It is very beneficial for health. It has choleretic properties so it is very useful. The ancient Sanskrit name of guava is ‘Amrit’ or ‘Amrutphal’. In Varanasi, it is still called ‘Amrit’ at many places. The taste of guava is sour-sweet and insipid. Apart from being delicious, guava also has medicinal properties. It helps in curing many diseases.

Cultivation of Guava

Guava is so well adapted to the climate of India that it is easily cultivated here. Guava can be cultivated in any type of soil and climate. Guava can be grown in all types of soil.

The land which gets filled with rain water, such land is not good for guava tree, because when rain water gets filled, its plants start drying up. Yellow clay soil is very favorable for this. The guava tree flourishes in the fertile land accumulated by the flood of the river. Giving rotten manure or compost of cow dung is very beneficial.

Guava Tree

Guava plants are of medium height, 10-12 feet in height. Its roots are not very deep. Leaves appear on both sides of the branches. These leaves are pointed in the beginning, but as they grow older, their points reduce. The leaves are thick, soft on the top and somewhat rough and veined on the bottom.

The guavas grown from seeds are small, with more seeds and less pulpy. Whereas the grafted guavas are relatively larger, with fewer seeds and more soft pulp. Guava cuttings are very famous around Allahabad, Banaras and Lucknow. A guava tree keeps on giving fruits easily for about 30 years.

There are two varieties of guava – white-fleshed and pink-fleshed. The white variety is sweeter.

Health Benefits of Guava

Guava contains vitamin C, calcium, phosphorus, iron, glucose, tannic acid and oxalate particles. Guava is a remover of Vata, Pitta, Worms, Trisha, Burning sensation, Delusion, Excitement, Madness and Fainting and also a semen enhancer.

People eat guava in many ways – by chopping guava with black salt and chili, or by making a vegetable, or by roasting it, or by making jam, etc. Constipation is relieved by eating cooked guava. Eating roasted guava reduces its cooling effect. Some people eat guava after roasting it and mixing jaggery in it.

Consuming guava with black salt and black pepper in the afternoon for a few days helps in bowel movement and provides relief in constipation.

Guava is a fruit that enhances intelligence and memory, so it is said to be a good fruit for students. People consume it even when there is fever and constipation in summer.

Gargling with the decoction of guava leaves removes swelling of the gums and dirt in the mouth. Decoction of the bark of guava tree is said to be beneficial in chronic diarrhoea.

Grind raw green guava with some water on a stone and apply it on the forehead in the morning, where there is pain, it provides relief in migraine. If the complete headache is not cured in one day, then do the same on the second day.

Precautions while consuming guava

Of course, guava is a very healthy fruit. But it should be consumed in proper quantity and at the right time.

The effect of guava is very cold, so eating it in the wrong way can also cause phlegm, gas, diarrhea and fever.

That’s why the best time to eat guava is in the afternoon. You can consume guava at meal time or after one or two hours of meal. Due to this, the body gets the essential elements.

Eating guava on an empty stomach or eating it in excess causes gas, diarrhea and fever can also occur. Guava seeds cause constipation.
