What is the Meaning of Statistics:
“Statistics”, has been derived from the Latin word ‘Status’ which means a group of numbers or figures; those represent some information of our human interest. Statistics are also found in everyday life, such as in books, magazines, television, newspapers or other information papers.
There are two meanings for “statistics”, i.e., the term “statistics” is employed in two senses: first in the plural sense and secondly in the singular sense.
In ancient times, when statistics had not developed much, then it was often accepted in the form of plural i.e. statistics. But later on, after the full development of this science, it has been used as a singular i.e. Statistical Science (or Science of Statistics).

♦ Meaning of Statistics in Plural Sense:
In a plural sense, the term ‘statistics’ is defined as a well-organized collection of numerical facts or estimates—the figure themselves. In this context, the public usually thinks of statistics, for example, population figures, profits of different units in an industry, and so on.
In Plural Form, the best and ideal definition of data is given by Prof. Horace Secrist. According to Prof. Horace Secrist,
“Statistics are aggregates of facts, affected to a marked extent by a multiplicity of causes, numerically expressed, enumerated or estimated according to reasonable standards of accuracy, collected in a systematic manner for a predetermined purpose and placed in relation to each other.“

♦ Meaning of Statistics in Singular Sense:
In a singular sense, the term “statistics” is more accurately defined as “statistical methods.”. In the singular sense, it refers to a subject of study like any other subject, such as mathematics, economics, science, and so on. That is, in the singular sense, the term “statistics” refers to Statistical Science (or Science of Statistics), which deals with the study of various statistical methods and techniques related to the collection, presentation, analysis and interpretation of figures.
In the singular sense, statistics is defined by Croxton and Cowden in a very comprehensive manner. According to Croxton and Cowden,
“Statistics may be defined as the collection, presentation, analysis and interpretation of the numerical data.“
