According to the Hindu calendar, the full Moon in January 2023 is Shakambhari Purnima and Paush Purnima. For the Sri Lankan Buddhists, this is Duruthu Poya.
♦ What is Paush Purnima, Why this full moon is called Paush Purnima –
This Full Moon (Paush Purnima), which traditionally marks the end of each month on the day of the full Moon, occurs on the last day of the Hindu month Paush.
According to the lunar calendar used in North India, the Magha month starts on the day after Paush Purnima, which is celebrated as the month of austerity.
In the Hindu calendar, Paush Purnima is an important day. It marks the start of the one-month-long austerity period observed throughout the Magha month. The North’s extreme cold season makes the austerity period more challenging.
People take morning baths in the Ganga or the Yamuna throughout the entire month of Magha Mahina. That is, beginning on Paush Purnima and ending on Magha Purnima, bathing is done every day.
On the day of Paush Purnima, taking a holy dip at Varanasi’s Dashashwamedh Ghat and Prayag’s Triveni Sangam is considered to be extremely auspicious and important.
Taking the holy dip on the auspicious day of Paush Purnima is believed to free the soul from the never-ending cycle of birth and death.
For both Shakambari Navratri and Magha, bathing in India’s sacred (holy) waters is a significant activity.
All charitable activities are believed to be easily fructified during this season. So, according to their capacity, people give charity to the needy.
♦ What is Shakambhari Purnima –
In the Hindu calendar, this full Moon is Shakambhari Purnima. That is, Shakambhari Purnima is also observed during Paush Purnima, which is also known as Shakambhari Jayanti.
It is the last day of the eight-day Shakambari Navratri (Shakambhari Navratri) festival that celebrates in honor of the goddess Shakambhari.
On this day, ISKCON and Vaishnava Sampradaya devotees and followers begin the Pushyabhishek Yatra.
Instead of beginning on Shukla Pratipada like most Navratris, Shakambhari Navratri starts on Ashtami and ends on Purnima in the Paush month.
Hence, there is eight days total in Shakambhari Navratri. However, Shakambhari Navratri might span for seven or nine days in some years due to missed tithi and leaped tithi, respectively.
Shakambhari Mata is the incarnation of Devi Bhagwati. It is believed that Devi Bhagwati incarnated as Shakambhari in order to mitigate the Earth’s severe food crisis and famine.
She is also known as the Goddess of fruits, vegetables, and greenery, and is portrayed surrounded by a greenery environment of fresh fruits and vegetables.
♦ Charta festival –
On the day of Paush Purnima, tribes living in rural parts of Chhattisgarh celebrate the Charta festival (छेरता पर्व).
♦ What is Duruthu Poya –
For the Buddhists of Sri Lanka, this full moon is Duruthu Poya, which commemorates Siddhartha Gautama Buddha’s first visit to Sri Lanka.
