Cancer and its Statistics – Cancer is disease which occurs due to uncontrolled cells growth (trillion of cells) and spread in other parts of body. Generally, in the body the cells grow and divides, dies the old cells and the new cells forms and replace the old and die cells. When this process breakdown and the uncontrollable cells growing starts abnormally in any body parts and spread in other body parts, then these cells form tumor.
There are two kinds of tumors, first benign tumor and second one cancerous (malignant) tumor. Benign tumor are not cancerous and generally don’t spread in the nearby body organs. However, it may harm the life if it occurs in the brain.
World Condition
According to World Health Organization (WHO), it is the second leading cause of death globally. Around one in every 6 deaths or 10 million deaths in 2020 were due to cancer. In Men, the most common type of cancers are Lung, Prostate, Colorectal, Stomach and Liver cancer, while in the same in women, breast, cervical, lung and colorectal are most common.
India Condition
Every year, World Cancer Day for the awareness and prevention of cancer is on 4th February. India, in terms of the highest number of cancer cases, has the third ranks in all over world. Approximately, 13 lakhs people suffers from cancer in India every years.
In India, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research (NICPR), cancer cases are increased by 1.1 to 2% every year and in the next five years, 12% of cancer cases will be increased. The deaths due to cancers are also increased by around 1%. As per Cancer Statistics Report, one woman dies in India due to cervical cancer in every 8 minutes. For every 2 women which are diagnosed with breast cancer in India, one of them will die. Due to use of tobacco and smoking, every day around 3500 people dies.
In India, the most common cancers which occur in men are Lip, Oral Cavity, Lung, Stomach, Colorectal, and Esophagus. While, in women are Breast, Lip, Oral Cavity, Cervix, Lung, and Gastric.
Cancer Causes
One of the main causes of cancers are urban pollution, high body mass index, tobacco, active smoking (active and passive both), alcohol consumption, unhealthy lifestyle, lack of physical activity, fast food consumption, ultraviolet radiation etc. In the lower-middle-income countries, the cancer causing infections are human papillomavirus (HPV) and hepatitis.
Generally, some cancers can be cured if it is detected very early.
