An event in Network Diagram:

The starting and ending points of an activity are referred to as nodes, connectors, or events in a network diagram. An event is that particular moment of time when a specific part of a project is to be completed, whereas an activity is the actual performance of a task. Words like complete, start, issue, approves, taste, and so on are frequently used to describe events.

Activities can be included within events. As an example, a cultural festival is an event that includes a variety of activities. As an example, the Olympics is an event, and playing the guitar is an activity.

The event does not take up any time or resources.

In a network, a circle is commonly used to represent an event and the event number is written within the circle. It is assumed when drawing networks that

(a) The direction of movement is from left to right.
(b) The number for the head event is greater than the number for the tail event.

Here, A is known as the activity, as shown follows:

In other words, activity ( i-j ) always denotes a job that begins at the event ( i ) and ends at the event ( j ), as shown follows:


The events are classified into three categories:

We know that an event denotes the completion of one activity and the beginning of another. Merge events, Burst events, and Merge & Burst events are the three types of events.

(a) Merge Event:

A merge event occurs when two or more activities come from an event.

(b) Burst Event:

A burst event occurs when more than one activity leaves an event.

(c) Merge & Burst Event:

At the same time, an activity can be merged and burst.


The following two axioms underpin network representation:

(a) An event is not considered complete until all of the activities leading up to it have been completed.

(b) No further activities can begin until the tail event has been reached or completed.
