Operations Research deals with problems concerning the best utilization of limited resources.
The subject Operations Research is a branch of mathematics – specially applied mathematics, used to provide a scientific base for management to take timely and effective decisions to their problems.
Operational Research is the scientific study of operations for the purpose of making better decisions. Operations Research is an Art and Science. It is a science which deals with problem, formulation, solutions and finally appropriate decision making. It is most often used to analyze complex real life problems typically with the goal of improving or optimizing performance.
To some, OR is that certain body of problems, techniques, and solutions that have been accumulated under the name of OR over the past 30 years, and we apply OR when we recognize a problem of that certain genre.
To others, it is an activity or process-something we do, rather than know-which by its very nature is applied.
- Operation research is a systematic approach to determining the optimum (best) solution under the restriction of limited resources.
- It is also known as Management Science / Quantitative Business Analysis / Quantitative Methods / Decisions Science.
The main objective of Operation research is to find out the optimum or best solution for decision making kept in mind there are limited resources.
Hence, the aim of Operation research is to provide a scientific basis to the decision-makers for solving the problems involving the operations of the system to give a solution that is in the best interest of the organization.
The solution is called the optimum solution to the problem.

Operation Research का सम्बन्ध सीमित संसाधनों के सर्वोत्तम उपयोग से संबंधित समस्याओं से है। Operation Research को शॉर्ट में OR भी कहते हैं।

गणित की, इसका उपयोग प्रबंधन (management) को उनकी समस्याओं के लिए समय पर और प्रभावी निर्णय लेने के लिए एक वैज्ञानिक आधार प्रदान करने के लिए किया जाता है।बेहतर निर्णय लेने के उद्देश्य से संचालन का वैज्ञानिक अध्ययन ऑपरेशनल रिसर्च कहलाता है। संचालन अनुसंधान (Operation Research) एक कला और विज्ञान है। यह एक विज्ञान है जो समस्या, सूत्रीकरण, समाधान और अंत में उचित निर्णय लेने से संबंधित है। अक्सर इसका उपयोग, आमतौर पर प्रदर्शन में सुधार या अनुकूलन के लक्ष्य के साथ, वास्तविक जीवन की जटिल (complex) समस्याओं का विश्लेषण करने के लिए किया जाता है।

- इसे मैनेजमेंट साइंस / क्वांटिटेटिव बिजनेस एनालिसिस / क्वांटिटेटिव मेथड्स / डिसीजन साइंस के नाम से भी जाना जाता है।
ऑपरेशन रिसर्च का मुख्य उद्देश्य सीमित संसाधनों को ध्यान में रखते हुए निर्णय लेने के लिए इष्टतम या सर्वोत्तम समाधान खोजना है।
इसलिए, ऑपरेशन रिसर्च का उद्देश्य निर्णय लेने वालों को सिस्टम के संचालन से जुड़ी समस्याओं को हल करने के लिए एक वैज्ञानिक आधार प्रदान करना है जो एक समाधान देने के लिए संगठन के सर्वोत्तम हित में है।
किसी समस्या के सर्वोत्तम समाधान को इष्टतम समाधान (optimum solution) कहा जाता है।
