Amla or Gooseberry has always been used in India. According to Ayurveda, Amla is one of the best fruits, the consumption of which can cure many major diseases. It makes the body not only healthy but also beautiful. It keeps your eyes, hair, skin etc healthy.

It is said that one who consumes Amla daily, old age stays away from him. In Ayurveda, Amla has been called Amritphal, Amalaki, Pancharasa. Ancient writers have called it ‘Dhatri’ (protector like mother) and ‘Shiva’ (welfare). Amla is very important not only from the point of view of health, but also from the religious point of view.

It is said that Amla is the favorite fruit of Lord Vishnu. According to belief, on Devuthani Ekadashi, when Lord Vishnu wakes up from four months of sleep (according to Prithvilok), then he first consumes Amla. That’s why on this day, offerings of amla, water chestnut and seasonal fruits are made to God. Amla tree is also worshipped. It is even said that if food is cooked and eaten under the Amla tree, many diseases go away and the body remains healthy.

Amla Tree

Amla tree is about 15 to 20 feet tall. The fruits are green, smooth, pulpy and astringent in taste. Amla trees are planted in many places in India. Amla trees are most commonly found in the Himalayan and peninsular regions. Apart from India, it is also found in Europe and Africa.

There are two varieties of gooseberry – white gooseberry and wild gooseberry. Green gooseberries are considered more potent and beneficial than dry gooseberries.

Properties of Gooseberry

According to scientists, Amla is the biggest source of Vitamin-C. Vitamin-C is 20 times more in gooseberry than in orange and sweet lime. Along with this, iron is also rich in gooseberries, so it is very helpful in making new blood in the body and increasing immunity.

921 mg of Vitamin-C is found in 100 grams of gooseberry juice. Along with this, 0.5 percent protein, 0.1 fat, 0.7 mineral elements, 14 carbohydrates, 0.05 calcium, 0.02 phosphorus and 1.2 percent iron are found in it. Apart from these, elements like tannic acid, gallic acid, glucose, albumin etc. are also found in it.

Amla Uses

Amla can be consumed in any form. A great specialty of Amla is that it may be used in any form, or in whatever way it is made, but none of its properties are destroyed.

Amla is used in most of the Ayurvedic medicines to keep the body healthy. Chyawanprash mainly contains amla. The biggest medicine of Ayurveda ‘Triphala’, which keeps the body away from many major diseases, is also made by mixing Amla, Harr and Baheda. Amla has the maximum part in it. Along with this, gooseberry candy, chutney, sawdust, syrup, jam, juice etc. are also made. Many people make jam and pickle of gooseberry and many people eat it raw.

Amla can be consumed before meals, in between meals and after meals, that is, at any time. Amla can be consumed in any season. Raw gooseberry should not be eaten in winter, or its juice should not be taken directly, because the effect of gooseberry is very cold. Along with this, people who have complaints of chills, or have problems with cold or phlegm, they should not eat raw gooseberry, nor should they eat gooseberry at night.

Benefits of Amla

♦ Amla has been described as a ‘blood purifier’. It cures many major diseases by removing the toxic elements found in the blood.

♦ Amla eliminates Tridosha (Vata, Kapha and Pitta).

♦ Amla can remove any kind of burning or irritation. It also keeps the body away from viral infections.

♦ Amla has the power to cure these health problems – cough, breathing problems, asthma, constipation, high blood pressure, cancer, impotence, anorexia, tuberculosis or leprosy, skin diseases, chest diseases, stomach problems, Worm problems, anemia and blood disorders, kidney diseases, hair loss, eye problems, poor digestion, heart related diseases and infections etc.

♦ Amla removes obesity by reducing fat. Prevents hair fall and strengthens them from the roots. Increases eyesight and also keeps teeth and gums healthy.

♦ Anti-oxidant enzyme found in Amla prevents aging. Amla also controls the sugar level, so it is also beneficial for diabetes patients.

Amla Benefits for Hair

• Boil gooseberries in coconut oil (heat gooseberries with coconut oil). Then filter it when it cools down and massage it gently in the hair. Wash the hair after some time. This makes the hair strong, black and thick.

• Boil gooseberry, cut it into pieces and dry it properly in the sun. Then soak these pieces in water overnight. Washing hair with that water in the morning makes hair shiny and black.

♦ Consuming one small spoon juice of fresh, good and ripe green gooseberry daily brings glow to the skin (juice can also be taken after heating).

♦ Consuming gooseberry powder mixed with honey improves eyesight.

♦ If there are blisters in the tongue, then taking amla powder after meals is beneficial.

♦ After washing gooseberry properly and boiling it, drinking that boiled lukewarm water is very beneficial.

♦ Mixing equal quantity of turmeric in gooseberry powder and consuming it provides relief in problems related to urine.

♦ Mixing ghee and sugar in gooseberry powder and consuming it early in the morning cures headache.
