radiation therapy teamwork in health care center, who are members of the radiation therapy team? what are the primary responsibilities of radiation therapists? is a radiation therapist the same as a radiation oncologist? what qualities should a radiation therapist have?

Radiation Therapy is a Teamwork in Health Care Center – The Radiation Therapy department is a perfect example of coordination and collaboration to work as a team in the health care centre. This team helps not only to deliver accurate and precise treatment to cure the patients but also to make them comfortable during, before and after the treatment and makes mentally strong the patients and their families.

When a cancer patient reaches the hospital, the patient’s treatment is done by many hands till the complete cure. These many hands work as a team throughout the complete treatment of the patient. In the Radiation Therapy department, people work as a team, some directly come to contact with the patients during treatment and some indirectly. The main team members are following along with their jobs:

  • Radiation Oncologist,
  • Radiation Oncology Medical Physicist,
  • Radiation Therapist,
  • Medical Dosimetrist,
  • Radiation Oncology Nurse,
  • Social Worker,
  • Dietitian.

Radiation Oncologist:

A Radiation Oncologist (a specialist and certified in the field of radiation therapy or radiotherapy) is a physician who oversees from every aspect to each cancer patient undergoing radiation treatment. Starting from OPD, the patient simulation, diagnosing, contouring, treatment planning, dose prescribing, and plan approval are supervised by the radiation oncologist. During the radiation treatment of the patient, the radiation oncologist monitors the radiation side effects, treatment benefits, and medical prescription (medicine) to the patient and makes sure the accuracy of treatment delivery. After the completion of treatment, the patient follows up is also performed by the radiation oncologist.

Radiation Oncology Medical Physicist:

A radiation oncology medical physicist or therapeutic medical physicist (a specialist, certified and expert in the field of radiation physics) is a qualified person, who is directly involved with the radiation oncologist in making an advanced treatment plan and treatment delivery. A medical physicist supervises the dosimetrist for all the complex planning of patients and their delivery. A medical physicist performs periodically quality assurances of the treatment unit to ensure the accuracy of the machine and precise treatment delivery. A medical physicist is responsible for all the equipment working safely and properly. Before delivering the treatment planning to the patient, the medical physicist ensures each patient planning delivery and plan quality before treatment.

Radiation Therapist:

The Radiation Therapist is the person who delivers the radiation treatment to the patients on daily basis. After the radiation oncologist, the radiation therapist is the person who is familiar with patients. A radiation therapist operates all the imaging machine and treatment units, and treat the patient accurately and precisely with all the advanced technology. They administer the daily radiation treatment under the radiation oncologist’s prescription and supervision.

Medical Dosimetrist:

The main work of a Medical dosimetrist is to generate the treatment planning using treatment planning software for the patient. They also may contour the normal and automatic structures such as lung, liver, spinal cord etc. and other control structures which helps in treatment planning. In addition, the dosimetrist may help medical physicists in the quality assurances of treatment and diagnostic units and in the research work area.

Radiation Oncology Nurse:

There is an important role of radiation oncology nurses in cancer patient treatment. They access the patientтАЩs overall health status before, during and after the treatment of the patient. They help patients and their family members mentally about the complex treatments and their side effects. They educate the patients about their treatment, their potential side effects and their management.

Social Worker:

Social workers in every hospital are available to provide practical help and counselling to patients or members of their families. They help the patient and their family with the stressors associated with a cancer diagnosis. They also may help arrange for home health care and other services.

Dietitian:

In every hospital, the dietitian also works for patients to help maintain nutrition. During the radiation treatment of the patient, they monitor the patientтАЩs weight and nutritional problems. They continue counselling the patient for a proper, nutritious diet. They monitor the patient weight loss etc.┬а
