Tabulation of Data:

We all know that the initial stage in tabulation is classification, and tabulation is concerned with the systematic organisation and display of classified data.

Tabulation is a type of logical data presentation method in which raw data is summarised and presented in a compact format, such as statistics tables.

In other words, tabulation is the systematic arrangement of data in rows and columns that represents data in a concise and attractive way. Rows are arranged horizontally, whereas columns are arranged vertically.

The purpose of a table is to simplify the presentation and to facilitate comparisons.

Parts of a Table:

The various parts of a table may change based on the data provided, but a good and decent table must include at least the following parts:

1.     Table number –

Each table should be numbered. It is given to be used for reference.

2.     Title of the table –

Every table must have a suitable title. It is a brief explanation of the contents of the table. What, where, and when in that sequence must all be answered in a complete title.

3.     Caption –

A word or phrase which explains the content of a column of a table, i.e., it explains what the column represents. One or more column headings may be included in it.

4.     Stub –

Stubs explain the contents of row of a table, i.e., stubs are the designation of the rows or row headings. They are at the extreme left.

5.     Body of the table –

Because it contains data, it is the most important part of the table.

6.     Headnote –

To convey the whole title information, a headnote is included.

7.     Footnote –

It is used to highlight data exceptions. Anything in a table that the reader might find hard to grasp from the title, captions, or stubs should be explained in footnotes.
