Onion or Pyaj has been used in food since ancient times. It is sown everywhere in India, because onions can generally be grown in any type of land. However, sandy soil is more favorable for this. Onion plants do not have branches, leaves emerge directly from the middle of it. Its leaves are straight and pointed like a long pipe.

Onion is a tuber, so as the onion gets its dose in the ground, it grows in the same way and layer by layer becomes a lump. There are mainly two varieties of onion – white and red, out of which white onion is considered better. It is also used as medicine. Whereas red onion is high in iron. However, people have their own preferences. Some people like white onions and some people like red onions.

Onion Recipe- By adding tempering of onion to anything like khichdi, lentils etc., its taste increases manifold. Tomato Onion Chutney is made. Onion dumplings are also made. Some people also eat onions by roasting them directly, it is quite tasty. Vegetables are also made from onion leaves. Saag is also made by roasting onions on high flame. Along with this, onion is also eaten by chopping it with food.

Properties of Onion- Onion has a cooling effect, so raw onion is consumed in summer and not in winter. Onion also has a special property of not allowing heat stroke. Iron, calcium, vitamin C are found in onions.

Onion is considered to be pungent in taste, enhances strength, enhances excitement, enhances taste in food and increases blood in women.

Onion is antivenom, that is, it destroys many types of animals inside the stomach. Removes heat from the stomach, makes the intestines active and helps in expelling stool.

When onion should not be eaten- There is no restriction on the consumption of onion-garlic in Ayurveda. In Ayurveda, onion-garlic etc. have been considered as a medicine. Charak and Sushruta have described onion as a nutritious substance to make the body strong, increase strength and make the brain strong.

Actually, the consumption of onion-garlic etc. also increases excitement… and that is why onion-garlic is kept in the category of vengeful food… and it is advised not to consume them at certain times, like- Before worship, chanting, etc. or during religious festivals etc.

Note- But keep one thing in mind that onion is beneficial for health only when it is always cut and eaten fresh. That is, never cut the onion and keep it for some time, neither in the fridge nor out of the fridge. It is dangerous to consume chopped onions for a while.

This is because, according to many studies, chopped onions start attracting the bacteria around them in some time. That is why cut onion should not be consumed in street food, hotel, restaurant or outside food. Cut the onion at home and eat it immediately.

♦ Onion is considered good for bones, so eating raw onion is considered beneficial for weak people and elderly people.

♦ Onion is considered a good chemical, medicine and nutritious food. It removes weakness of the body.

♦ Onion is considered beneficial in tuberculosis, heart disease, vomiting, anorexia, vata, bile, sweating, swelling, cholera etc. Onion is also considered good for lungs.

♦ Chewing raw onion is very good for the teeth, as well as it also removes stomach worms.

♦ On the bite of any poisonous insect like burr etc., grate the onion and rub its juice at that place, it provides relief.

♦ Onion is good for eyes and skin. Consuming onion is also considered good in infectious diseases.

♦ Consuming raw onion with food in summer is very beneficial. If there is a headache due to heat, then sniffing the onion cut or rubbing finely onion on the soles of the feet provides relief.

♦ If raw onion mixed with lemon juice and rock salt is eaten with food, then it is very good for health. By eating onions in this way with food, many health problems related to heat are removed.

Precautions in the consumption of onions

♦ A certain quantity has been fixed in Ayurveda for everything. That is, everything given by nature for food should be consumed in proper quantities. There should be neither excess nor deficiency of anything, only then it is beneficial.

♦ Onion has many benefits, but its benefits are only when you consume it in proper quantity and in the right way. Consuming too much onion can be harmful for health, so consume onion in proper quantity only.

♦ Some people cannot digest onions. Such people get gas by eating onions, or they have to work harder to digest onions. Such people should eat only small amounts of onions.

♦ Consumption of onion and milk together is ‘anti-diet’. Therefore, keep a gap of at least 3-4 hours between the consumption of both onion and milk.

♦ If there is pain in the eyes, then the consumption of onion should be reduced at that time.

♦ Raw onion is more beneficial than cooked onion, but onion should be cut and eaten immediately, otherwise it will harm instead of benefit.
