Primary Data:

Primary data refers to the data collected by the researcher himself for a specific purpose. In other words, those data which are originally collected for the first time by a researcher or agency for any statistical research are called primary data.

Therefore, primary data is a type of data that researchers collect directly from original sources through interviews, surveys, experiments, etc. Primary data is generally collected directly from the source from which the data originated, and is considered the best type of data in research and study. In other words, the measurements observed and recorded as part of an original investigation are called primary data.

When the data needed for a specific study is not available in the enterprise’s internal records or in published sources, it becomes important to collect original data to perform first-hand (or direct) investigation. In most cases, the amount of time, money, and labour available for the task of collecting the original data for study and research is limited.

When the amount of data to be collected is huge, it is possible to make reasonably accurate conclusions from the examination of a small sample (portion) of the group. Regardless of whether all items are included or only certain items are considered, the actual procedures utilized for data collection are essentially the same.

It is clear that the planning of collection of primary data is original and primary data is the result of original research.

For example, if a researcher collects fundamental data about the standard of living of the employees of a company in the country, then those data will be called primary data for him.

There are mainly two ways to collect primary data:

• Questioning, and
• Observation.
